Bulb & Plant Sizes

Sizes of bulbs are often confusing. Generally, the larger the bulb, the better the bulb; larger bulbs produce larger and more flowers. The Dutch standard size is based in centimeters in circumference.

Daffodils (also referred to as Narcissus in the U.S.) are sized as follows: DN I is the largest, with a 16+ centimeters (cm) in circumference; DN II is 14-16 cm; DN III is 12-14 cm.

Tulip bulbs generally fall within three sizes, with varying circumferences: Top size is 12+ cm. Cir. (4-3/4″+ circ.); medium size is 11-12 cm. circ.- with a minimum circumference of 10 cm. (4-3/8″) and a maximum circumference of 11 cm. (4-3/4″); and small is 10-11 cm. circ. (4 to 4-3/8″ circ.).

Other bulbs (Alliums, Crocus, Iris, Lycoris, Muscari, etc.) have varying bulb sizes, with top size being the largest and best bulbs. Top size in some bulbs can be as big as an apple, while top size in others can be small as a pea.

For reference, we have listed all the bulb sizes on this website. You can be assured that all K. Van Bourgondien & Sons bulbs you receive will be the highest quality Dutch bulbs.

All of our bulbs are commercially grown and not collected from the wild.

No. 1 Size Roots/Liners:
Our perennials spend a growing season in special growing fields or in greenhouses to ensure maximum development. They are then harvested and the most vigorous plants are considered No. 1, blooming size. Generally, these are shipped as dormant bare root plants.
No. 1 Rhizomes:
Top of the line blooming size, a horizontal underground, or partially underground, stem which produces roots, shoots, and leaves. Iris are considered rhizomes.
Bulb Sizes:
Bulbs are listed in centimeters and diameter. This is the international measuring standard for all bulbs. We list only the top of the line blooming bulb sizes.
1-2 and 2-3 Eye Roots:
Eyes refer to the point of growth on a plant root. Depending on the plant, 1-2 or 2-3 eye plant roots are the highest grade and are blooming size. Peonies, Astilbes and Hosta have “eyes”.
Potted Plants:
Indicates the pot size in which a plant will be shipped to you. Where this applies, we have indicated the exact pot size in the item descriptions.
Pricing:
All item are prepackaged in set units. All prices listed are for one variety, color or as a mixture of colors. Sorry, mixing and matching is not available.
